The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is located on Wellington’s waterfront in a characterful brick building with a Historic Places Trust, classification 1. The building had been strengthened in the 80’s, but not in a very sensitive or effective manner. CCM’s challenge was to seismically upgrade it to at least 70% of Code and this was achieved by post tensioning all the exterior brickwork and tying into a new capping truss. This tricky structural work was all hidden, and the historic visual appearance unaltered.
Concurrently, CCM designed the upgrade of interiors with a new entry, admin and storage areas. This refreshed gallery is open to the public with ever changing exhibitions.
