Ngā Huia is a major project within Massey University’s 10‑plus‑year, $160 million redevelopment of the Tāwharau Ora | School of Veterinary Science. Replacing outdated mid‑20th‑century facilities, the Stage 3 building strengthens Massey’s role as Aotearoa New Zealand’s only veterinary school and reinforces its status as a world‑class, research‑driven institution. The brief called for specialist laboratories, collaborative learning and office spaces, and a culturally grounded design developed in partnership with local mana whenua, Rangitāne o Manawatū.
The design response delivers a purpose‑built, seamless learning ecosystem integrating advanced scientific facilities with contemporary academic and student spaces. Specialist laboratories support research in infectious diseases, pathobiology, animal welfare science, and native and production animal health, expanding New Zealand’s capability in areas of national importance. Academic and postgraduate areas, student hubs, and collaboration zones align the building with international veterinary education standards.
Embedding cultural narrative was central to the project. Collaboration with Rangitāne o Manawatū shaped both architectural expression and how the building operates as part of Tāwharau Ora. Mātauranga Māori guided design foundations, ensuring the kaupapa and cultural identity of place were integral to decision‑making and form. Ngā Huia contributes significantly to the wider community and the wellbeing of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Its enhanced research and laboratory functions enable Massey to support national responses to disease outbreaks, pandemics, and One Health challenges, providing expertise to government and international bodies. As the training ground for veterinarians serving agricultural, wildlife, and companion‑animal sectors, the facility strengthens a workforce essential to animal health, food systems, biodiversity, and national biosecurity.
Located on Massey’s Manawatū campus, Ngā Huia completes the upgraded veterinary precinct alongside prior redevelopment phases, including the Student Learning Complex and Wildbase facilities. The demolition of the ageing vet tower in 2022 informed circulation, orientation, and re‑established the precinct’s identity. Integration with the Massey Masterplan (2013) improved campus urban design by activating edges along University Drive, increasing visibility into the building, and enhancing pedestrian and cycling connections. These improvements provide safe integration of active transport routes with necessary service‑vehicle movements.
Key planning and design constraints included constructing within an active veterinary campus, managing complex laboratory and ventilation compliance, and engineering large façades to accommodate structural movement while maintaining airtightness and weather performance.
Material selection prioritised sustainability wherever possible. Recycled rimu from the former vet tower is used extensively in interior finishes, while high‑spec laboratory materials meet stringent durability and hygiene requirements. Custom‑engineered louvre and façade systems contribute to building performance, longevity, and architectural identity.
Ngā Huia now stands as a flagship for veterinary science in Aotearoa—technically advanced, culturally grounded, and purpose‑designed to support Massey’s students, researchers, and the nation’s agricultural and biosecurity future.
