MPI Biocontainment Laboratories
This is a new Bio-Containment Laboratory located at the existing MPI site in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt. For this project, CCM partnered with lead consultant Merrick who are bio-containment specialists in Canada.
The external material selections and design seek to provide an appealing exterior, with extensive windows. The building sits within a residential environment and there has been strong emphasis on blending the building into the heavily treed surrounding environment.
The building has importance level 4 (IL4) and has lead/rubber base isolators within an accessible basement. The 4 storey structure above is steel framed and heavily braced to reduce inter story defections to the minimum, and CCM was involved in the optimising of this structural concept with engineers Dunning Thornton.
The facade and roof have to meet very stringent air infiltration criteria and the quality and care over the external fabric detailing is exemplar. CCM has engaged facade engineers Mott MacDonald to assist with the signing off of the facade, and coordinates their efforts.
