Te Hopai Home & Hospital Opens New Wing

On the 16th December 2014 Te Hopai Home & Hospital welcomed the first residents into the brand new wing on Owen Street, Newtown. Established in 1888, Te Hopai is one of New Zealand’s oldest charities and has been providing aged care services on the same site for over 125 years.

The new two story extension of 47 en-suite bedrooms will have its own entry, reception and carpark which will be accessed through Owen Street when completed.

Structurally, the new building has been designed with low damage technology incorporated, so that in the event of a major earthquake it remains functional and can continue to serve the needs of the residents.  This has been achieved using an advanced Precast Seismic System (PRESSS) passing through two levels.  We believe it is the first aged care home in New Zealand to have this low damage technology.

Each floor has its own resident lounge areas, nursing support facilities and expansive views over Newtown and toward the Town Belt.  The building is connected via new lifts and stairs to the existing 104 bed home on Hospital Road. A full new commercial kitchen is included within the development and will provide meals for all residents at Te Hopai.  All resident rooms have full cover removable ceiling hoists eliminating unnecessary lifting by care staff and resident risk when being moved.

Te Hopai has a long standing and dedicated team whose focus is always on maintaining an excellent reputation for quality care.  In 2013 Te Hopai achieved a four year certification from the Ministry of Health Audit and continues to strive for excellence in the delivery of healthcare services for the aged in the community.

Increases in compliance costs and demands has seen the departure of some operators in the charitable sector, however Te Hopai continues to grow and provide excellence in aged care, without any additional charges.  This means all residents, irrespective of their personal circumstances, get the same level of service, care and high standard rooms.  This provides a viable alternative to private organisations, where the ability to pay determines the care package provided.
